Las hormonas sexuales son las sustancias que fabrican y segregan las glándulas sexuales, es decir, el ovario en la mujer y el testículo en el varón. El ovario produce hormonas sexuales femeninas, es decir, estrógenos y gestágenos, mientras que el testículo produce hormonas sexuales masculinas o andrógenos. El estrógeno más importante que sintetiza el ovario es el estradiol, mientras que la progesterona es el más importante de los gestágenos. La testosterona es el andrógeno que produce el testículo.
